Introduction
In the world of AI and conversational large language models (LLMs), crafting effective prompts is crucial to getting the best possible results. By understanding and utilizing specific prompt patterns, users can unlock deeper insights, better answers, and more efficient interactions. Whether you are looking to streamline conversations, automate tasks, or gain more control over the output, leveraging these patterns will transform how you work with LLMs.
In this post, we’ll explore four powerful AI prompt patterns that can enhance your interactions with LLMs: the Persona Pattern, the Flipped Interaction Pattern, the Cognitive Verifier Pattern, and the Question Refinement Pattern. Each of these patterns has unique strengths, and when applied effectively, they can drastically improve the quality of the responses generated.
Here’s a quick look at the prompt patterns we will be covering:
- Persona Pattern: Tailoring the LLM’s role to provide responses from a specific perspective.
- Flipped Interaction Pattern: Allowing the LLM to take the lead in asking questions to achieve a goal.
- Cognitive Verifier Pattern: Breaking down high-level questions into smaller ones for better reasoning.
- Question Refinement Pattern: Helping the LLM suggest better versions of a user’s original query for improved accuracy.
Now, let’s dive into the details of each of these patterns!
The Persona Pattern
This pattern involves setting a specific role or viewpoint for the LLM when generating output, making the responses more tailored to particular needs.
- Intent and Context: You want the LLM to embody a specific persona (like an expert, coach, or mentor) to offer more contextually relevant responses.
- Motivation: Tailoring the LLM’s behavior to different personas makes it adaptable for various tasks, from learning to task execution.
- Structure:
From now on, respond to my questions as if you are a [role/persona], and your goal is to [objective]
- Example: “Act as a fitness coach and guide me through creating a workout routine for a beginner.”
- Consequences: While this pattern offers highly tailored advice, it requires well-defined instructions to ensure the persona remains relevant throughout.
The Question Refinement Pattern
This pattern encourages the LLM to help you formulate a better, more refined version of your question. It’s particularly helpful if you’re unsure how to phrase your query or lack domain knowledge.
- Intent and Context: Helps users refine their questions, allowing the LLM to assist in finding the right question for more accurate answers.
- Motivation: Users may lack the expertise or awareness of additional information helpful for better phrasing. The LLM can suggest improved prompts based on context.
- Structure:
- From now on, when I ask a question, suggest a better version of the question to use instead. - (Optional) Prompt me if I would like to use the better version instead.
- Example: If you ask, “How can I increase productivity?” the LLM could refine this to “What are effective strategies for increasing productivity in a remote work environment?”
- Consequences: This pattern helps bridge knowledge gaps but could lead to over-narrowing of inquiry. It’s helpful to combine this with other patterns for a broader perspective.
The Cognitive Verifier Pattern
This pattern subdivides your main question into several smaller questions to ensure the final answer is more precise and accurate.
- Intent and Context: Encourages the LLM to generate additional questions that lead to a better, well-rounded answer.
- Motivation: Humans may ask high-level questions, making the initial response incomplete. Breaking the question down improves accuracy.
- Structure:
- When I ask a question, generate three additional questions that would help you give a more accurate answer. - Combine the answers to individual questions to create the final answer.
- Example: For the query “How do I improve my fitness?” the LLM might ask:
- “What is your current fitness level?”
- “What is your primary goal (e.g., strength, endurance)?”
- “Do you have any physical limitations?”
- Consequences: Helps users get better, contextual answers but can sometimes overwhelm with too many questions.
The Flipped Interaction Pattern
This pattern allows the LLM to take charge of the conversation by asking you questions until it gathers enough information to complete a task.
- Intent and Context: Instead of you driving the conversation, the LLM asks you questions to achieve a specific goal.
- Motivation: The LLM may know better how to extract the necessary information, improving both accuracy and efficiency.
- Structure:
- I would like you to ask me questions to achieve [Goal X]. - You should ask questions until this condition is met or to achieve this goal.
- Example: “From now on, ask me questions to gather enough details to help me create a personalized productivity plan.”
- Consequences: This pattern works well for goal-driven interactions but may ask redundant or irrelevant questions if the initial prompt lacks clarity.
Combining Patterns
Each of these patterns can be combined for even better results. For example, you could combine the Question Refinement and Cognitive Verifier patterns to ensure both refined and comprehensive questions are generated, yielding an even more precise answer.
